About
I’ve had an interest in photography and have been taking pictures most of my life. My father was a keen amateur photographer and, as fathers do, he shared his passion with his children. (The camera you see in the image is his beloved Canon A-1, which I inherited close to 30 years ago and still sees an occasional roll of film). However, I only starting taking photography seriously as a hobby in 2008 when I bought my first DSLR in an attempt to do some semblance of justice to the stunning landscape around Argyll and Bute.
I’m now based in Northumberland, but for close to 30 years Helen and I lived to the west of Glasgow. From time to time we’re joined by one or other of our two adult daughters. Until I retired enjoyed a career in investment management working in Glasgow, London and Edinburgh, which gave me the resources to pursue my hobby but left me with limited time to devote to the pastime. In early 2019 I took the decision to take a career break (probably permanent) and after a suitable handover period I left paid employment in March 2020. Just as the first national lockdown started. Sweet.
The Scottish landscape features highly in my back catalogue and I hope the the images reflect my love of the country’s variety and beauty. Going forward I expect that the Northumberland coastline will play a much larger part. That said, I’m happy to try my hand at most things photographic with the result that my pictures have no fixed style. (I checked this point with my youngest daughter and she was only too happy to confirm that I had no style!)
Looking ahead I hope to spend the next few years exploring my twin passions of photography and exploring the landscape, now mainly Northumberland but with the occasional trip further afield. I’m also an active member of Paisley Colour Photographic Club, which has a high standard of photography and provides an addition challenge and impetus, as you may gather from their website. Overall, the aim is also to develop my photographic eye and technique; this website will allow me to share some of the experiences and lessons, as well provide a space for me to muse aloud… I hope you enjoy.
