Heading South. 2 - London Lights
By seeing London, I have seen as much of life as the world can show. ― Samuel Johnson

While I’m sure that were he alive now, Samuel Johnson would (perhaps with cause) be accused of being an over-enthusiastic fanboy, there is no doubt that there is nowhere in the UK quite like London. The specific purpose of this trip south was, in fact, to photograph some of London’s skyline after dark rather than just Brighton. I’d done a recce in mid-December when I was last down, but I was limited with time and conditions were not ideal.
Two weeks before Christmas roughly 95% of the population of the south east descends upon the Southbank and the vast majority of these people were sporting Santa hats on their egregious little heads. This very much leaves my boat unfloated… Coming back in February I had the benefit of it getting dark relatively early and the area around the river being much, much quieter.
I do like this style of photography and, for a first proper attempt, I’m reasonably pleased with the results and have learnt a few lessons for the next time. I took a few shots from this location on Jubilee Bridge; only about 50% were usable as the bridge suffers from vibration as the trains pass. You have to pick your moment…
There are plenty of alternative locations still to explore; Canary Wharf and the area around Battersea Power Station both look likely candidates. The location from this trip that I will definitively be revisiting is More London. Despite the attentions of quite keen security guards, it’s well worth the effort.
